Sweet heat left me wanting more, and I could not touch a book for days afterwards. I wanted to savour the feeling of it. Bernadine Evaristo’s books are in a class of their own.
My absolute favorite read of 2025 was Orbital by Samantha Harvey. It won the Booker (I think the year before) and is breathtakingly beautiful (and short). Considering your love of travel and the world, I would think you’d enjoy it. It’s really a love song about our shared humanity.
SWEET HEAT WAS SO DAMN GOOD! I literally cried! I felt like this book was speaking to my soul! The D'angelo references. The prose. The way she wrote about love... My heart melted, my soul fluttered. I wish I could read this book again for the first time. If my future man don't love me like Kofi and Malakai, I don't want him!
I also didn't love Can't Get Enough. Tbh I still haven't finished it. But let me pick it back up to see how it ends. I'll have to check out the auntie series. Thanks for the recommendations!
Thanks for sharing! I love being put onto new books. I read the before Sweet Heat and this a reminder to grab that one. I never heard of the aunties series, but gonna look into it.
Fantastic breakdown of these reads! The way Evaristo weaves those multi generational narratives together is something I still think about months after finishing it. That unconvetional punctuation choice actually makes the voices blend more naturally when reading out loud, almost like overhearing conversations. Have you considered checking out any other Booker winners for the club?
Thank you for this. I’ll have to add Sweet Heat to my list. Reading a few books and the verdict is still out. But I’ll have to circle back when I’m done.
The Skyland series is my recommended books especially for women who want to get back into reading and want something good and a little steamy. Plus, I want someone to watch the upcoming series with!

Read ‘Trees’ last fall by Everett. It brought me out of my reading slump. Plan to read Girl, Woman, Other soon
Let me add that to my list!

The Aunties are hilarious and I got to learn a bit about Indonesian culture.
